Edinburgh

We arrived at Edinburgh yesterday after a lazy morning and short train ride from Glasgow. As soon as I saw the city I knew I would love it. In the distance old buildings with chimneys could be seen, as well as old churches, castles, and ruins. I couldn't wait to see it. My dad got directions to the hotel amd we climbed a steep hill around a curve to get to our hotel at the top.....I can NOT wait to unload my backpack with my dad! Haha...

After dropping off our bags we set out to explore the Royal Mile which is only steps away. The charming street had vendors selling jewellery, shirts, bags and hats. There was a couple of churches, one converted to a night club, and many small restaurants. It was after lunch so we stopped at a small pub for lunch. Afterwards we wandered some more before returning to the hotel to check in. Our room is beautiful! We head out to see Edinburgh castle which is about 7 minutes away. Unfortunately we got there too late so we head down to get our train ticket to London and to book our tour to the Higlands. There are so many to choose from and I don't know what I want to see so we take the books back to the hotel to decide. After a lovely dinner at the hotel restaurant, where the waitress had been to Calgary Stampede, we booked a tour for Saturday. And then I did laundry! Lame I know, but my clothes really needed cleaning and how lucky that it is free here at the hotel!

Today we got up and after breakie we went to Ediburgh Castle. The outside is so amazing as it is built right on a rock. The view in every direction is breathtaking but I have to say I was slightly disappointed in the modernized interior. It was impossible to picture what it may have been like, except in the prisons! Haha....we had fun though, poking around. Afterwards we went to the other end of the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace. The Queen still stays here when she comes to Edinburgh. We had a free audio tour which was so informative. Mary Queen of Scots lived here before being imprisoned in London by Queen Elizabeth I. The Holyrood Abbey ruins are adjacent to the palace and are beautiful. The ruins also extend into the gardens where they were only recovered a few years ago.

On our way back up the Royal Mile it started to snow....no I mean hail! It was actually laugh out loud funny as it was blowing right in our face. My dad had specifically said he didn't want to travel to snow! Lol.....

I love this city and it's character but I can't wait to see the Highlands tomorrow.
